Regardless of what others may believe and what some would choose to have you think, Slavery is still prevalent in our modern society. Although, it has now taken different forms, slavery's existence has marked one of the lowest levels of incompetence in mankind since the beginning of civilization. The exploitation of human beings in the world (both in the past and in the present) remarks to humanity the need for a higher level of universal philosophy and moral ambiguity. Our inability to achieve these goals allows the existence of perverse tyrants who endorse slavery as a means to achieve their self-fish desires.
In the past many nations have both owned slaves as well as been enslaved to others. Nations struggled against nations and empires rose and fell all to the accord of spreading the human race through-out the world. In the Koran it says, "...And if Allah had not repelled some men by others, the earth would have been corrupted." Yet the idea of slaughtering innocent women and children never sits well with any culture. So perceivably, slavery, becomes a tool of mankind to justifiably deal with the remnants of a defeated nation. In some way this behavior can be seen as acceptable considering the option of the total genocide of a people.
Even though nations fought nations and men enslaved other men, a moral standard of fairness and justice was kept by some cultures in order to deal with having slaves. To the Hebrew people fair treatment of a slave was done in self-reflection; for they themselves were enslaved from time to time. The ability to always remain observant to reality allowed them to understand that they should never act as their captives acted by abusing and killing those kept in captivity. This kind of mentality is what sets the Hebrew religion and other similar religions apart from any other, and is recognizable as a standard of necessary compassion for all types of men.
In our modern era, slavery, should be non-existent. Our focus on humanity and morality should dictate a broader and evolved sense of compassion for an individuals sovereignty and personal rights, not just as a citizen of just any country but as human beings. No nation or group should outline our integrity to live freely and opportunistically. An outline that has echoed forth from antiquity starting in the Hindu book of the Ramayana and ending in modern times with the Gettysburg address. All of humanity should experience a free form of thought and a free form of will. Yet, nefarious men, corrupt governments, and greedy individuals still give credence that enslavement others is necessary to accomplish their goals.
In today's society there are several forms of slavery which are publicly known and unknown. One of the worst underground forms of modern slavery is found within the International Human Trafficking industry. Where men, women and children are 'obtained' through abduction or coercion and enslaved to work in forced labor, prostitution and sometimes as human sacrifices. The hidden world of human trafficking is a disturbing epidemic that infects every nation on Earth. Even more disturbing is the reality that after more than 200 years of the American, Emancipation Proclamation Act we have seen the end of slavery and the rightful freedom of ALL human beings.
Human trafficking, is the third largest illegal industry in the world. The first two black-market industries of illegal drugs and illegal arms (weapons) trading provide an open door for the need to have forced servitude. With the distribution of narcotics, forced prostitution becomes a necessity for the paradigm. Women and children are both trafficked across the same routes as the narcotics industry in order to provide sexual entertainment for clients whose mentality condones both substance abuse and sexual exploitation.
In the very gut of the issue of force sexual slavery, children unfortunately are part of the most prolific and abused victims. In many countries, children as young as 5 years are forced to subjugate their small bodies to satisfy men. To quote from an article published by the UN Chronicle Online, "A teenage girl screams in terror as she is beaten by a man twice her size. Trapped in a squalid basement in a foreign country, bruised and bleeding, she is at the complete mercy of her captors. Having been repeatedly raped and forced into prostitution, the continued psychological torture has pushed her to the depths of despair."
The imagery provoked in this article written by Sally Bolton, is grim, disturbing, and grotesque. Yet, it is closer-than-reality to what some children from human trafficking countries have to endure everyday. The brutality of enslaved people from all over the world goes un-noticed and ignored. Some people though are eventually allowed to buy back their freedom or are rescued by law enforcement, yet the psychological damage put upon them stays with them forever. Needless to say, children are never allowed to buy their freedom and remain in this industry sometimes until death.
It is important to note that the smuggling of human beings does not only come from impoverished countries or third-world areas. People are abducted from ALL parts of the world, even in America. While Canada ranks our closest neighbor for human trafficking, the epidemic in America is just as great. Although, the idea of human trafficking never occurs to most U.S. citizens the alarming numbers of missing people should:
-2,300 American Adults are reported missing every day.
-2,185 American Children are reported missing every day.
-58,000 of those children are victims of non-family abductions
-In the past 25 years that number has been multiplying at an alarming rate.
-797,500 children are reported missing in the U.S. every year
The question to really ask yourself, here is, "Where did they all go?". As usual, the answer is always in the question. Somewhere other than here.
Slavery is still in effect today, but by anyone's standards it is worse today than at any given time in history. It seems that the greater mankind evolves civilization, mankind also evolves victimization and abuse. In the past the American culture has celebrated it's liberation from tyrannical monarchies, from the bigotry of racial influence, but has never liberated itself from slavery. Because those that are free, never bother to care about those who are not free. As a paradox to American culture, ignorance, is the only prison.
"Freedom" is not just a word in a dictionary,
"Freedom" is not just a philosophical law.
"What God has joined together, let NO man tear apart..."
"Freedom" and Mankind are one.
